UME is named for the plum blossom — the first to open while winter still lingers. It is a small promise of what’s to come, and it is how we think about a meal here: a series of small, deliberate moments that add up to something you remember.

An izakaya is a place to linger — to share plates, pour another round, and let the evening stretch. We built UME for exactly that. The fish is broken down through the day rather than held, the robata runs hot for the cuts that earn it, and the claypots come to the table still working.
Nothing here is complicated for its own sake. Good produce, treated with respect, served at the right moment.
You’ll find us on Toorak Rd, a short step from the heart of South Yarra. Low light, warm timber, and a counter where you can watch the knife work if you choose to sit close.
Come for a quiet weeknight dinner, a celebration with the table full, or simply to take something exceptional home.

An izakaya runs on what’s in the glass as much as what’s on the plate. We keep a considered list of sake — from crisp junmai to cloudy nigori — alongside plum wine and sparkling styles for the table.
Ask the floor for a pairing; they’ll point you somewhere good.
